A 5.5×8.5 book on IngramSpark requires a PDF/X-1a:2001 compliant file with CMYK or grayscale color space, all fonts embedded, a minimum inside margin of 0.5”–0.875” depending on page count, and a spine width calculated as page count × 0.0025” (cream) or × 0.002252” (white). IngramSpark’s file requirements are stricter than KDP’s — the main differences are PDF/X-1a compliance and mandatory CMYK color space.

PDF/X-1a export checklist
Your interior PDF must meet all of these:
- PDF/X-1a:2001 compliant — set in your export dialog
- All fonts embedded — no linked or substituted fonts
- CMYK or Grayscale color space — no RGB anywhere, including images
- Transparency flattened — no live transparency in the PDF
- Trim box set to 5.5” × 8.5” — exactly 396 × 612 points
- Output intent declared — CMYK output profile in PDF metadata
- No printer marks — no crop marks, registration, or color bars
- Even page count — add a blank page if your content ends on an odd page
From Word: Microsoft Word cannot produce PDF/X-1a natively. You’ll need Adobe Acrobat Pro to convert, or use a dedicated formatting tool.
From InDesign: File → Export → Adobe PDF (Print) → select “PDF/X-1a:2001” preset.
From Cambric: Select IngramSpark as your output target — PDF/X-1a settings, font embedding, and CMYK conversion are handled automatically.
Cambric handles PDF/X-1a compliance, CMYK conversion, and font embedding automatically when you target IngramSpark. No Acrobat Pro required.

Page count estimates
At 5.5×8.5 with 10.5–11.5pt body text and professional margins:
| Word Count | Estimated Pages | IS Printing Cost (B&W, cream) |
|---|---|---|
| 50,000 | ~195 | ~$3.85 |
| 60,000 | ~230 | ~$4.40 |
| 70,000 | ~260 | ~$4.88 |
| 80,000 | ~280 | ~$5.20 |
| 90,000 | ~315 | ~$5.76 |
| 100,000 | ~345 | ~$6.24 |
IngramSpark’s per-page cost is higher than KDP’s — typically $0.015–$0.017 per page for B&W vs KDP’s $0.012. Factor this into your list price. Many authors set IngramSpark list prices $1–$2 higher than KDP to maintain margins, or accept a lower per-unit profit for the wider distribution.
Cover setup for IngramSpark
IngramSpark provides a cover template generator that calculates exact dimensions.
Cover width = 5.5” + spine + 5.5” + 0.25” (bleed) = 11.25” + spine Cover height = 8.5” + 0.25” (bleed) = 8.75”
Example: 280 pages on cream paper
- Spine: 0.7”
- Cover width: 11.25” + 0.7” = 11.95”
- At 300 DPI: 3,585 × 2,625 pixels
Important: IngramSpark requires a barcode zone on the back cover (lower-right, 2” × 1.2” minimum). They can auto-place it or you can include it in your file.
Use the Cover Size Calculator for instant dimensions.
Hardcover options at 5.5×8.5
IngramSpark offers hardcover (case laminate) at 5.5×8.5 — KDP’s hardcover options are more limited. For hardcover:
- Interior specs are the same as paperback
- Cover file includes a different spine calculation (add 0.5” to the paperback spine for the case wrap)
- Minimum page count: 18 pages
- Significantly higher printing cost: roughly $7–$10 for a 280-page B&W book
Hardcover is a premium offering — many authors release paperback first, then add hardcover for readers who want a nicer edition.
Common IngramSpark rejections
- Not PDF/X-1a compliant — the #1 cause. Check your export settings.
- RGB images — even a single RGB image triggers rejection. Convert everything to CMYK.
- Spine width mismatch on cover — your cover spine must match the calculated width. If your page count changed, regenerate the cover template.
- Odd page count — must be even. Add a blank page.
- Font not embedded — some system fonts (especially CJK fonts) fail to embed. Test with a PDF preflight tool.
