To format a children’s book for KDP, choose your trim size by age group (8.5”×8.5” for picture books, 5.5”×8.5” for middle grade), use 300 DPI images in RGB color, and export as PDF with bleed if illustrations go to the page edge. Children’s books are the third-largest print category on Amazon — parents, grandparents, and teachers buy millions of copies. KDP supports full-color printing, making it viable for illustrated children’s books. A 32-page picture book costs ~$3.60 to print in color at 8.5×8.5.
Trim size by age group
| Age Group | Type | Recommended Trim | Pages |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–3 (board book) | Board book | Not available on KDP | — |
| 3–5 (picture book) | Full illustration | 8.5” × 8.5” or 8” × 10” | 24–40 |
| 5–7 (early reader) | Illustration + text | 6” × 9” or 8” × 10” | 32–64 |
| 7–10 (chapter book) | Some illustrations | 5.5” × 8.5” | 80–150 |
| 9–12 (middle grade) | Text-only or minimal art | 5.5” × 8.5” | 150–300 |
Important: KDP does not offer board books. For ages 0–3, you’ll need a different printer.

Picture book formatting
Image requirements
- 300 DPI minimum at print size — a full-page 8.5×8.5 image needs 2850×2850 pixels (with bleed: 2925×2925)
- RGB color — KDP uses RGB, not CMYK (IngramSpark uses CMYK)
- Full bleed — if illustrations go to the page edge, add 0.125” bleed on all sides
- Page size with bleed: 8.75” × 8.75” for an 8.5×8.5 trim
Layout
- Text overlaid on illustrations — ensure text contrast with a white or semi-transparent backing
- Font size: 16–20pt minimum for picture books
- Font choice: clear, rounded fonts (Century Gothic, Sassoon, Comic Sans alternatives)
- Consistent text placement — readers (often parents reading aloud) need to find the text quickly
Page count
- Picture books are almost always 32 pages (or 24, 40, 48)
- KDP requires even page count, minimum 24 pages
- The classic picture book structure: 24 pages of story + 8 pages of front/back matter = 32
Color printing costs

| 48 | ~$1.91 | ~$4.72 | +$2.81 |

Middle grade formatting
Middle grade novels (ages 9–12) format similarly to adult fiction with adjustments:
- Trim: 5.5” × 8.5”
- Font size: 12pt (slightly larger than adult fiction’s 11pt)
- Line spacing: 1.4–1.5× (more generous than adult)
- Chapter illustrations: optional spot illustrations at chapter openings (B&W to keep costs low)
- Chapter titles: fun, descriptive titles are standard in middle grade (unlike adult fiction)
- Interior: B&W (use cream paper for fiction, white for nonfiction)
Bleed settings
| Book Type | Bleed? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Picture book (full-page art) | Yes — 0.125” all sides | Art goes to page edge |
| Early reader (art in margins) | Maybe — only if art touches edge | Check each spread |
| Chapter book (spot illustrations) | No | Art stays within margins |
| Middle grade (text-only) | No | Text-only interior |
If you set bleed, your PDF page size must include the bleed area. For 8.5×8.5 with bleed: 8.75×8.75.
