Tips for a strong book description

  • Front-load: The first 2–3 sentences show above the fold
  • Use bold for key phrases readers scan for
  • Keep it under 300 words — readers skim, not read
  • End with a call-to-action or hook
  • Include comp titles if relevant (“For fans of...”)

Common Questions

Book Description Formatter FAQ

What HTML tags does Amazon KDP allow in book descriptions?
KDP allows a limited set: <b>, <i>, <br>, <h1> through <h6>, <p>, <ol>, <ul>, <li>. No CSS, no images, no links. Bold and italic are the most commonly used.
How do I add bold text to my KDP book description?
Wrap text in <b> tags: <b>Your bold text</b>. You can also use <i> for italic. KDP strips most other formatting.
Why does my Amazon book description look different from what I entered?
Amazon strips unsupported HTML tags and may reformat your description. Stick to the supported tags (<b>, <i>, <br>, <p>) and preview in KDP before publishing. Empty lines become single line breaks.
How long should my Amazon book description be?
Amazon allows up to 4,000 characters (including HTML tags). Most successful descriptions are 150–300 words. Front-load the first 2–3 sentences since they show above the “Read more” fold on Amazon.
Can I use bullet points in my KDP description?
Yes. Use <ul> with <li> items for unordered lists, or <ol> with <li> for numbered lists. Bullet points work well for listing what readers will learn (nonfiction) or comparable titles (fiction).
