An 8.5×11 book on IngramSpark requires a PDF/X-1a:2001 file with CMYK or grayscale color space, embedded fonts, a minimum inside margin of 0.5”–0.875” depending on page count, and an even total page count. At this trim, the CMYK requirement is especially important — most image-heavy layouts (cookbooks, children’s books, photography) contain color images that must be converted from RGB to CMYK before export.

CMYK for image-heavy layouts
This is the biggest challenge at 8.5×11 on IngramSpark. Your cookbook photos, children’s illustrations, or portfolio images are probably in RGB. They must be converted to CMYK before building the PDF.
What happens if you don’t convert:
- Colors shift — especially blues and greens look muddy in CMYK
- IngramSpark may reject the file outright
- Even if accepted, printed colors won’t match your screen
How to convert:
- Photoshop: Image → Mode → CMYK → save
- Affinity Photo: Document → Convert → CMYK
- Cambric: Handles CMYK conversion automatically when targeting IngramSpark
Cambric converts images to CMYK and exports PDF/X-1a automatically when you target IngramSpark. No Photoshop or Acrobat needed.

Spine width
Same formulas: Cream: page count × 0.0025” | White: page count × 0.002252”
| Pages | Cream Spine | White Spine |
|---|---|---|
| 50 | 0.125” | 0.113” |
| 100 | 0.250” | 0.225” |
| 150 | 0.375” | 0.338” |
| 200 | 0.500” | 0.450” |
IS requires 0.5” minimum spine for text. Most image-heavy 8.5×11 books are under 200 pages, so spine text is often not possible. Use the Spine Width Calculator.
