IngramSpark rejects covers when the file dimensions don’t match the calculated template for your trim size, page count, and paper type — they’re stricter about this than KDP. The most common cause: your interior page count changed after you created the cover, shifting the spine width and making the total cover dimensions wrong. Even a 5-page change alters the spine by 0.0125” — and IngramSpark checks this precisely.
How cover dimensions work
Cover width = 0.125” bleed + back panel (trim width) + spine + front panel (trim width) + 0.125” bleed
Cover height = 0.125” bleed + trim height + 0.125” bleed
Spine width:
- Cream/55# paper: page count × 0.0025”
- White/50# paper: page count × 0.002252”
The most common problems
1. Page count changed after cover creation
You built your cover when the interior was 280 pages (spine = 0.700”). Then you added an “Also By” page — now 282 pages (spine = 0.705”). The cover is 0.005” too narrow.
Fix: Always finalize your interior page count completely before ordering the final cover. If the interior changes, regenerate the IngramSpark cover template and have your designer adjust.
2. Wrong paper type in spine calculation
Cream paper spine: 300 pages × 0.0025” = 0.750” White paper spine: 300 pages × 0.002252” = 0.676”
If your book uses cream paper but you calculated the spine with the white paper formula, your cover is 0.074” too narrow.
Fix: Confirm which paper type you selected in IngramSpark and use the matching formula. Use the Spine Width Calculator — it asks for paper type.
3. Missing barcode zone
IngramSpark requires a barcode area on the back cover — minimum 2” wide × 1.2” tall, typically in the lower-right quadrant of the back panel. If you didn’t leave space for it, IS can’t place the barcode.
Fix: Either include the barcode in your cover file (you can generate one from your ISBN), or leave a clear 2” × 1.2” area in the lower-right of the back panel. Avoid placing critical design elements there.
4. Missing bleed
IngramSpark requires 0.125” bleed on all four edges of the cover. If your file is the exact wrap-around size without bleed, it’s too small.

Cover file specifications for IngramSpark
| Requirement | Value |
|---|---|
| Format | PDF (recommended) or JPEG |
| PDF standard | PDF/X-1a:2001 (same as interior) |
| Color space | CMYK |
| Resolution | 300 DPI minimum |
| Bleed | 0.125” on all four edges |
| Barcode zone | 2” × 1.2” minimum, back cover lower-right |
Note: The cover PDF must also be PDF/X-1a compliant with CMYK color — the same requirements as the interior.
Hardcover / case laminate covers
For hardcover on IngramSpark, the cover wraps around a rigid case that extends beyond the page block. Add approximately 0.625” to each panel dimension (the “board overhang”). IngramSpark’s template generator handles this — always use their template for hardcover.
